Our Story
Blue Sky Disaster Relief grew out of a single tornado, a teenager named Leo, and a refusal to let families face the aftermath alone.
2019 · The night everything changed
One night in 2019, Leo — a Dallas teenager — was sheltering in his bedroom with his dad and their dog when a heavy storm spun up into a tornado. In less than ten minutes, it tore their home apart.
By sheer luck, one of the only rooms left standing was the very room they'd chosen to wait out the storm. They had nowhere to sleep that night — but they were alive.
"The next morning, we dug through broken glass under a bright blue sky. We felt vulnerable and lost — but we knew we were the lucky ones." — Leo, founder of Blue Sky Disaster Relief
2023 · Turning pain into purpose
In the years that followed, Leo watched severe weather grow more frequent and more destructive. In 2023, he decided to act — researching exactly what families need in the chaos after a disaster, then assembling the first Blue Sky relief kits by hand.
The name came from that morning after: the impossibly blue sky above the wreckage, and the kindness of friends and neighbors who showed up. Blue Sky exists to be that kindness for the next family.
Today · A growing mission
What began in a single household is now powered by volunteers who assemble kits, raise awareness, and drive supplies straight to disaster sites. Together, Blue Sky has reached families across four states hit by tornadoes, wildfires, and hurricanes — delivering more than 1,000 relief supplies, both directly and through partner organizations.
And the mission has grown beyond the kits. Today Blue Sky also offers NestProtect, a free app that helps families prepare for and recover from 17 types of natural disaster — so resilience can start long before the next storm.
